Here are some easy steps that will get you ready to embark on your Swim Teacher journey.
Training. The Swim Teacher by Royal Life Saving course uses the most up to date learning methods as it’s delivered through a combination of online theory, face-to-face learning and on-the-job practical experience. Leveraging our strong network of instructors and swim instructors you will receive seasoned guidance and support throughout your training.
Support. Royal Life Saving WA will be your one point of contact from enrolment through the life of your licence so you can be assured that the information you get along the way is the most up to date and accurate. Whether it’s questions about your online theory, to the latest free professional development opportunities, we’re here for you.
Accreditation. Upon successful completion of the Swim Teacher by Royal Life Saving course and practical hours, in conjunction with having a current Working With Children check and CPR certificate, students will be issued a Swim Teacher Statement of Attainment and a licence to conduct swimming and water safety classes.
Swim Teacher by Royal Life Saving is recognised by the following organisations:
- National Sport & Recreation Industry Training package
- National Aquatic Industry Safety Committee
- Western Australian Department of Education
- Western Australian Department of Health (as an approved qualification of Swimming and Water Safety instruction)
- Western Australian Department of Training and Workforce Development
- Western Australian Endorsed Swim School Committee
Licence and Membership application
Swim Teacher licences are valid for one year from the date of issue. For information on renewing your licence, click here.
Applying for your Swim Teacher licence renewal means you also apply to become a member of Royal Life Saving Society WA. Along with this comes perks.

- Access to the Royal Life Saving WA Swim Teacher community Facebook page

- Insurance cover for the duration of your Swim Teacher licence.
Your application for both Membership and Licence will be sent to the Board for consideration, and you will be notified of the Board's decision as soon as practicable.
